Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
