New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
